Chiang Mai

Business and holiday travel accommodation, bookings, reviews and comments for the best price in last minute hotel specials.Chiang-Mai is a must to visit. A perfect place to witness the Thai culture in this 700 year old walled city. The wet season is from june to October with the wettest month being September. We visited in July and had a few very welcomed showers whilst on a mountain trek. The people in Chaing-mai were in my opinion a reason to visit again. On our mountain trek, a two day hike including an elephant ride and bamboo canoe, the guides were good humored and patient with the slower members of our party. A must is a Thai massage, great value and we could affort an hour long body massage every day not a luxury I would normally do at home. Chaing-Mai is one of Thailand's main tourist destinations. Shopping in Thailand goes without saying.

Next trip I am going with just the clothes I am wearing and replacing my wardrope whilst I'm there. Clothing, and souvenirs are complemented with an extensive range of electrical and computer goods. We took the plunge and hired a couple of motor bikes and risked our lives in the trafic. It was a highlight of the trip, and every traffic light was a mass of bikes all racing off in front of the cars. We took our bikes to the zoo and up to a wak in the mountains. There are hotels and accommodation houses in Chiang-Mai to suite every budget.

Chaing Mai Tours and attractions

It is said that the further north you go, the nicer the people are. This is defiantly true about Chaing Mai, the people are fantastic, you will immediately feel the more relaxed atmosphere. Chaing Mai is renowned for its treks, regardless of your fitness level, you have to do one. You can go on a one, two or three day trek. All have elephant rides and bamboo rafting, but the longer you stay the longer you walk. I personally think the two day is ideal. You get to visit and stay in a village, but one night is enough. Chaing Mai is a great place to get a moped. If you want to go to the temple or the zoo a taxi will cost more. You can hire on for approximately B200. Driving in the city is a little daunting, but the chaos works well. Everyone gives way to everyone, so do not be surprised if you get cut off. As far as food is concerned, I found it difficult to find bargain prices. A standard price for a meal is B100. This was unusual because everything else is so much cheaper than the rest of the country. Defiantly go for massages here, a one hour Thai massage costs B100, this is about a third of the price than elsewhere. These are not hotel prices, these good prices can be found inside the city walls. Shopping is great; the markets are much cheaper than in Bangkok and negotiations are more successful and enjoyable. Remember haggle them down, they will go at least 50% off. The night bazaar is good, however if you want atmosphere and good shopping, try the weekend markets. There are great bars around that cater for western needs, music and festive atmosphere, and brilliant food stalls and restaurants. Getting to Chaing Mai is quick and relatively affordable by place. If you want a more economical option try the train. Don’t be afraid of second class sleeper “with out aircon”. There are no private rooms, but they are clean and very comfortable beds for only B700. One thing to be concerned about are the toilets, however if you are accustomed to these already, you should be fine. Cheaper still is the bus, approximately B500, but it is a long trip, no quicker than the train and a lot less fun.
